॥छेदी राम॥

हम दोनों तीस साल पहले मिले थे

छेदी राम की इस छोटी सी दुकान पर

इंडिया एक्सचेंज के पास वाली गली में

मुझे नहीं पता था कलकत्ते की बारिश में 

दिल्ली के बने जूतों के सोल

किसी नाव की तरह बह जाते हैं

मुझे आश्चर्य था 

बालूजा का नया जूता पहली ही बारिश में

जनता के विश्वास की तरह बिखर गया

उन दिनों लोगों के पास 

दर्ज़न भर जूते भी नहीं हुआ करते थे

मेरे पास तो दूसरा भी नहीं था

कराहते जूते लिए

प्रवीर ने मुझे छेदी से मिलवाया 

और हम दोस्त बन गए

तब मैं और छेदी दोनों ही जवान थे

मैंने बताया, भाई बिल्कुल नया जूता है 

पता नहीं क्यों सोल निकल रहा है 

और पानी अंदर घुस रहा है;

छेदी ने जूते का मुआयना किया और बताया

बाबू, यह जूता बंगाल के हिसाब से नहीं बना है

मुझे अचम्भा हुआ 

जूतों में भी प्रांतीयता सर्वोपरी है!

छेदी ने कहा 

यहाँ चमड़े के सोल के ऊपर 

रबड़ का सोल भी ज़रूरी है

क्या आप नहीं जानते 

ज्योति बाबू की इंदिरा जी से अच्छी दोस्ती है 

इसी दोस्ती के चलते उन्होंने बंगाल में 

कांगेस को सोल विहीन कर दिया है

अब काँग्रेस के जूते में भी हुगली बहती है बाबू साहेब!

मैं इस गूढ़ दर्शन को समझ नहीं पाया

छेदी ने समझाया ------ 

तो आपके इस दिल्ली वाले जूते पर 

हम कलकत्ता का रबड़ सोल जड़ देते हैं

यहाँ के मशहूर चीनी जूता कारीगर 

इसे ही लगाते हैं

कामरेड इसी को पहन कर दिन भर

दफ्तरों के बाहर 

लाल सलाम, लाल सलाम कर कदमताल करते हैं

मैं छेदी की कलाकारी पर मुग्ध हो गया

हर नए जूते का यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार 

छेदी राम ही करवाते

कुछ ऐसे इंतज़ाम करते 

जो जूता बनाने वाली कम्पनियाँ 

जान-बूझ कर नहीं करती थीं

वह एड़ियों पर 

हवाई जहाज़ के टायर का रबड़ चिपका देता 

तो मुझे वैसा ही लगता जैसे लाखोटिया जी ने 

कोई टैक्स चोरी का नुस्खा बता दिया हो

जूता ठीक हो गया

यहाँ तक कि दौड़ने लगा

जिस दिन इंदिरा जी की हत्या हुई

आगजनी, लूट-पाट 

और बम-बाज़ी से आतंकित शहर में

जूता, डलहौज़ी से 

साल्टलेक, करुणामयी तक पैदल ही दौड़ा 

उस दिन मुझे समझ आया

जूता पहनने के लिए पाँव ही नहीं 

अक्ल भी ज़रूरी है।

Almost 30 years ago

We met with Chedi Ram

At his small shoe repair shop,

May rightly be called shoe clinic/hospital

Near the lane behind India Exchange

And became good friends.

It was not known to me earlier

That sole of Delhi made shoes

Were humbly poor to face

The torrential rain of Calcutta

Where soles were swept away in no time.

I was shocked to see

Even Baluja’s new shoes gave way

Like people’s faith on voted one.

Those days it was very difficult to have

More than a single pair of shoes.

Surprised by such sudden but humiliating loss,

I went to shoe-master Chedi Ram with my friend

Carefully carrying the split shoes and its soles.

Both of us were younger lot then

And turned bosom friends by and by.

I told Chedi,” Listen my friend !

This is a brand new pair of shoes,

But failed to face the City rain

And the sole allowed water to seep in.

He very minutely examined my shoes

And humorously said,

’’Sir, this is not made for this place.’’

Again calmly said

’’Do you know one thing , sir,

Here leather soles need rubber soles either”

I was surprised to find the fact

That even shoes bore regional superiority.

His humour grew sarcastic,

“Indira was the best friend of Jyoti Babu,

But Congress lost its soul to him

And their soles float on the surface of Hoogali.”

Chedi grew philosophical,

’’ I’m pasting my rubber sole on leather one.

Chines shoe makers use this.

Comrades use it in their day long activities,

Taking marches to different offices.

I was mesmerised by his artistry.

He made me believe

That every sole needed a soul.

He was master of baptising soles

And we used to get it done by him.

He meticulously did something strange

That no shoe company ever preferred

–Pasting a piece of tyre of airplane

On the leather sole of company made shoes.

It appeared to me 

As if someone has taught me 

The trick of tax evasion.

I got the sole of my shoes properly repaired.

Now it was ready to bear my weight comfortably.

    The day when Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated

And Metro went on unbearable rampage,

My shoes made a rough race against time

Throughout the day

From Dalhausie to Saltlake to Karunamoyee.

That day my mind agreed to it

That wearing shoes needs thinking legs.
