काश! तुम  आ जाते 

कई बार देखा है,

लोग झिड़क देते हैं उन्हें।

बच्चे, जवान, प्रौढ़-

हर उम्र का व्यक्ति -

बस झिड़कता है उन्हें। 

कभी किसी के आगे

हाथ नहीं फैलाते वे

लेकिन मैंने देखा है,

प्लेटफॉर्म पर,

इस-उस के पास जाकर

ध्यान से चेहरों को टटोलते हुए,

जैसे कुछ खोज रहे हों।

वे बाद में खड़े होते हैं,

'आगे बढ़ो बाबा आगे'

की आवाज़ें पहले आने लगती हैं। 

लेकिन उन्हें कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता

इन आवाज़ों से,

वे भीख कहाँ मांगते हैं,

वे तो खोज रहे हैं

उस बेटे को,

जो साल भर पहले

इसी प्लेटफॉर्म पर

छोड़ के ग़ायब हो गया था,

पानी लाने के बहाने।

वे अब तक प्यासे हैं,

स्नेह के...........

लगाव के..........

इज़्ज़त के, और........

पानी की उस बोतल के,

जो बेटा अपने साथ ले गया।

का अँग्रेजीअनुवाद 

Old Man On The Platform

Many a times

I have seen him

On the platform

Walking end to end,

His eyes searching for

Something,or someone 

Among men of every age:

Growing, grown ups 

And men of age,  

 And of experience. 

Insensitive lots at platform

Taking him to be a beggar,

And treating him the same way,

Disliked him absurdly 

And shied away

Having disdainful look at him

All for no reason.

The old man was not begging,

He was a distraught Columbus

Searching the shore

In the sea of human crowd

His interrogative look

Was searching for something

On every face,

In everyone’s eyes.

When felt tired,

He leaned against a cart

Full of boxes 

For some rest.

Passengers disliked his presence

Looking at his dishevelled attire,

Uncombed grey hair. 

Reason found no space.

Now some people started shouting,

“Move away from here, go away”.

But such sounds made no sense

As he was not begging,

He was searching for his son

Who has left him here a year ago

On the pretext to bring water for him.

He still has the thirst 

But of affection and respect, 

Not of bottled water.
