QUESTIONS OF MOIST EYES

Shrestha,

It is very harsh to know

That you were treated and targeted

Like anything.

They described your eyes as deep as a lake or ocean,

Nobody dared to fathom it out.

It was called  blue sky,

Nobody dares to measure out

Its upward blue.

There were many definitions

With many shades.

Anusuiya’s  oozing affection for children,

Radha’s overbrimmimg love,

Meera’s hell bent devotion for His lord,

Saw simplicity filled Sita,

And Hardened core of Durga.

But today

I looked into the moist eyes

Of a lady,

She was a mother.

When I looked into her eyes

It was full of affection (for her children).

One day there was tears in her eyes,

Tears of separation , tears of agony

About the past

Rudely forgotten.

Deeds were negated,

She was discredited

Of her love and care,

Calling it her duty to the siblings

As theirs was for their children.

Seen sitting at the temple stairs

Keeping bouquet of blessings in her hand

For her thankless kids.

Next was the eyes of a young woman,

Wearing the symbols of newly wed bride.

It was the eyes of a wife,

Of a daughter of other side

Showing full devotion to the family,

But listening absurd for no reason,

The Moonless night continued.

There was no burning candle in sight.

Yet, she remained fully devoted to the cause,

Called “Family.”

Tears were always in an introductory mode,

“Will anybody show me the place of my existence?”

“Who am I ?”

The question always haunts my mind.

Now a bride, I’ll turn a mother

And be encircled

To many more relations

Till  I lay to dust.

Now I looked into the eyes of a new born babe,

She is a nascent girl in her mother’s lap.

Many members of the family had a wry smile

On their faces.

There was murmur in the air,

The murmur of displeasure and despair,

”A baby girl is born again .”

“Keep her under strict vigil.”

Hearing such silent roars

Against her existence was unbearable

Such words were very piercing.

Nobody could see the moist pain in her eyes,

Agony of her mind against the apathy being faced.

She didn’t know why she was so unwanted.

Life was full cold taste,

Teasing scorns and blind restrictions.

It ruined the emotional infrastructure

And killed my soul.

Now worshipped, now abhorred.

Where is the fullness of a women?

The search is still on.

Someone will save the Sun,

Someone go Moonless.

Who’ll come to answer,

Who’ll solve the puzzle of moist eyes.

और पानी अंदर घुस रहा है;

Chedi Ram (17/02/2021)

We met with Chedi Ram

At his small shoe repair shop,

May rightly be called shoe clinic/hospital

Near the lane behind India Exchange

And became good friends.

It was not known to me earlier

That sole of Delhi made shoes

Were humbly poor to face

The torrential rain of Calcutta

Where soles were swept away in no time.

I was shocked to see

Even Baluja’s new shoes gave way

Like people’s faith on voted one.

Those days it was very difficult to have

More than a single pair of shoes.

Surprised by such sudden but humiliating loss,

I went to shoe-master Chedi Ram with my friend

Carefully carrying the split shoes and its soles.

Both of us were younger lot then

And turned bosom friends by and by.

I told Chedi,” Listen my friend !

This is a brand new pair of shoes,

But failed to face the City rain

And the sole allowed water to seep in.

He very minutely examined my shoes

And humorously said,

’’Sir, this is not made for this place.’’

Again calmly said

’’Do you know one thing , sir,

Here leather soles need rubber soles either”

I was surprised to find the fact

That even shoes bore regional superiority.

His humour grew sarcastic,

“Indira was the best friend of Jyoti Babu,

But Congress lost its soul to him

And their soles float on the surface of Hoogali.”

Chedi grew philosophical,

’’ I’m pasting my rubber sole on leather one.

Chines shoe makers use this.

Comrades use it in their day long activities,

Taking marches to different offices.

I was mesmerised by his artistry.

He made me believe

That every sole needed a soul.

He was master of baptising soles

And we used to get it done by him.

He meticulously did something strange

That no shoe company ever preferred

–Pasting a piece of tyre of airplane

On the leather sole of company made shoes.

It appeared to me

As if someone has taught me

The trick of tax evasion.

I got the sole of my shoes properly repaired.

Now it was ready to bear my weight comfortably.

The day when Mrs. Gandhi was assassinated

And Metro went on unbearable rampage,

My shoes made a rough race against time

Throughout the day

From Dalhausie to Saltlake to Karunamoyee.

That day my mind agreed to it

That wearing shoes needs thinking legs.

I AM GRASS

See! I’m grass.

I’ll undo your seasoned efforts.

I’ll grow in every nook and corner.

Whether you bomb the university,

Turn the hostel into debris

Or dislol ate our huts,.

But what will you do to me ?

You know I’m grass

I’ll grow on every possible surface.

Destroy Banga or Sangroor,

Put Ludhiana District to dust,

But my greenery will  work

Be it after two years……ten years  or more

Passengers’ll again ask the conductor,

Which place is this,bro?

Please drop me at Barnala

Where there is jungle of grass.

Listen,I’m grass.

I’ll overshadow your efforts.

I’ll grow everywhere

Be it space of yours or others.

Old Man On The Platform

Many a times

I have seen him

On the platform

Walking end to end,

His eyes searching for

Something,or someone

Among men of every age:

Growing, grown ups

And men of age,

 And of experience.

Insensitive lots at platform

Taking him to be a beggar,

And treating him the same way,

Disliked him absurdly

And shied away

Having disdainful look at him

All for no reason.

The old man was not begging,

He was a distraught Columbus

Searching the shore

In the sea of human crowd

His interrogative look

Was searching for something

On every face,

In everyone’s eyes.

When felt tired,

He leaned against a cart

Full of boxes

For some rest.

Passengers disliked his presence

Looking at his dishevelled attire,

Uncombed grey hair.

Reason found no space.

Now some people started shouting,

“Move away from here, go away”.

But such sounds made no sense

As he was not begging,

He was searching for his son

Who has left him here a year ago

On the pretext to bring water for him.

He still has the thirst

But of affection and respect,

Not of bottled water.
