जब भी मेरा कोई मित्र कोलकाता पहुँचता है;

वे सीपीआईएम के अलीमुद्दीन स्ट्रीट कार्यालय भी जाकर आए;

29 वर्षों के बाद समय लौट आया था;

चैतन्य स्त्री हो गई थी;

कठोर अहम्‌ को भली-भाँति पहचानती हो;

Where are you, Ms. Piyali ?

Whenever any close friend of mine visits Calcutta

He is very keen to know about you,

About your whereabouts

By one way or the other.

I do tell them

"Last time I met her in 2013

On the stairs of the National Library."

My friends went to the Library several times

Just to search you out-

A doe-eyed girl with silvery hair,

But Piyali Ghosh was nowhere .

My friends visited even the office of CPI(M)

At Alimuddin street,

Here also, the air was silent on you.

One of my friends who is in Kolkata these days

Made me a call in the morning

And asked, “Why don’t you give the address of your friend?”

Reading your poem

I went through the entire list

Of CPM’s electoral candidates of Bengal.

Had she been an active member of the party

I might have seen her in some election rallies.

I said, ‘She might have gone to Cuba, North Korea,

Vietnam, Laos or China

Or in some Naxal dominated area

To finish the unfinished work of her late husband.

Next possibility was that

Like her husband

She might have been killed in one of the encounters.

“What kind of lover you are!” my friend yelled at me.

In my memory a“Black & White” film is being screened.

I grow interrogative to myself,

“Did I ever love Piyali ?”

When I first met her in 1984

She was a pretty lass

Who became an important member of CPI(M)

While studying political science and music in the Presidency College.

She was a blind follower of Jyoti Babu,

And was actively fighting for the rights of proletariats.

I was nothing but a man of job.

Living within a framed love zone.

Did I have any moral right to love her?

She was a very good friend of mine.

Her each act mesmerised me .

With the passage of time

Piyali’s physical presence had lost its sheen

The way a child forgets the taste of mother’s milk

With the passage of time

But never forgets her touch and teachings

That makes him feel the pulse of relationship.

I have always seen her as a complete woman.

People say that the Earth is round

And time never takes a U-turn.

But impact of a strong planet is such

That past was before me

And after a long period of 29 years.

I was facing the ravishing Piyali, my Venus

On the same stairs of National library once again.

Time had matured her

And she was looking more gorgeous now.

As her experience and vision towards life

Enlightened her face.

She looked awakened

Like Draupadi after Mahabharta war

Who decently born the fierce fight,

Bloodshed and killings without accepting defeat.

There was a scant material exuberance

Stored by me with great efforts

If compared to Piyali’s grand metamorphosis.

The sparkle of her hardcore struggle matched the Sunrays

The brightness whereof forced me to turn my face,

I was in no position to accept her invite.

Sunetra,

You very well know the unbeatable ego of  a fatigued and failed man

So tell me where and why should I have kept her address?

कि वह बज उठे धीरे से;

खुशबू और मिठास;

Like A Gramophone (Final)

Father is silent like a flute

His soul needs the warmth of outcoming breath

To get all musical.

Love cracks such a soothing melody

That touches the heart of the  Earth

And soars to the blues of the sky

Affection makes him a flute master,

A fruit-seller too

With a variety of fruits in his store

Sitting on the threshold of his house

Mastering taste and essence of them all.

He looks at them intently,

Freshens them with soft cotton touch

And keeps them intact

With a wish to make his little soul eat

Each and every tasty tasted fruit,

And  becomes Shabri for his son.

In the horizon of mind

He travels down the memory lane

Where on a long drive

He cradles him to sleep,

Keeps an ice-soaked towel on his forehead

To calm down his heat.

He bears

His becoming unruly for an ice-cream,

Getting glued to the last stair of a toy-shop,

Coming with heavy heart from school

Being upset with his teacher,

Or bringing a winner’s trophy.

Father feels elated

Like the fluttering pages of an album

 In a pleasant breezy day.

But father doesn’t know

What children think of love,

He doesn’t even know

Why priorities make a windy shift

When siblings grow young,

Why  their taste and temperament

Moves west ward.

Now children don’t eat fruits,

Don’t get stubborn for anything,

Don’t utter nursery rhymes,

Or short stories of their interest,

They prefer ordering pizzas & burgers, hot dogs.

Father maintains silence like any other father

He feels placed in the corner of a living room

Like a ‘Gramophone’.
