Ramnihore:The Ricksaw Puller

Meeting with Ramnihore,

A rickshaw puller in Kolkata

Was like a journey to the world

Where gravity sucks the seed of energy,

The calves turns rock-hard

And both the hands bend like  a bow,

The man running on the road

Gasps like a summer a dog

And fails to utter a word.

He pulls from museum to Free School Street

Know not why now called Mirja Galib Street.

Everyone in the area knows him

Be it an agent of a hotel or of a brothel ,

Generations were pulling the rickshaw here.

Look intently!

Everywhere you will find

The footprints of their cracked ankles,

As if circumambulation of a civilization is lying underneath.

His memory fails to remember

The names of his forefathers,

But he says, “His Rickshaw is hundred years old,

And the hand - bell is eighty years old

Which is used to call the people around,

And not the clean the road.

There was a bronze plate affixed

Just below the small row of a hanging bells

And on that plate was written:Calcutta - 19121”.

His ears had it that

His forefathers were from Buxar

Who had pulled the rickshaw for Britishers,

And those who couldn’t pull the wheels on road

Turned coolies at Hawrah Junction,

Or went to Jute mills as labourers.

He had heard stories of people turning Girmitias

Or preferring to be a peon in the office.

Even today Ramnihore likes foreigners

To the core of his heart,

Who pay him generously

And give him costly items,

Or even their cigarettes as gift.

At times they even loved to drive his rickshaw

But not for free.

Locals don’t pay fare without altercations

Even when there is west high water on roads all arounds

During rainy days

And they fail to reach their homes.

Kolkata is the last mile destination for Ramnihore,

Going to Patna or Delhi

Is beyond his active horizon.

He knows that govt. is unwilling to allow rickshaw on road,

But is rest assured that all is safe

Under the umbrella of police and mafia

And progression towards 21st century is culminating.

He never went to school

He learnt everything

In the free school street, hotels & Dhabas.

But today his children are students

Of Kalighat Govt. school

His wife sells toys, sandle-wood and flowers.

By 8 o’clock in the evening

He returns home everyday

Where rests his small world.

During off season when tourists are in numbers

He silently scolds those

Who hypocritically skip hand-rickshaw

Saying that it is highly inhuman

To force a man to carry another man.

He grows interrogative,

“Would it be better to become a beggar

Keeping his self-respect aside,

Or start stealing or die hungry?”

Far and wide it’s clear

That such people will have to face the music

Here and here only

 One day.

To meet Ramnihore makes me ardently feel

As if I’m meeting a man

Who like a big sea-turtle

Bears the burden of this Earth

And the civilization

Without being God.

और कमानियों से खिंच जाते हैं दोनों बाजू;

उनकी फटी एड़ियों के निशान;
